Sundials are those clever devices that provide the hour of the day based on the position of the sun. One of the most unusual is the Sunquest sundial and it originated in Landisville, Pennsylvania. Richard J. Schmoyer, a mechanical
engineer who lived at 335 Stony Battery Road in Landisville, sold the first Sunquest sundial in 1959. Sixty years later, Kenneth R. Clark, a sundial enthusiast from Elizabethtown, created an exhibit of the Sunquest and other sundials made by Schmoyer before he died in 1997. The exhibit was at the Amos Herr House in the exhibit room. Kenneth Clark donated a Sunquest Sundial to the Foundation and it is displayed on a table in Emma’s Keeping Room.
The Salunga Post Office is now located in Emma’s Keeping Room in the basement of the 1852 Amos Herr House. It was in operation until the late 1980’s when the Eastern Mennonite Missions dismantled it and donated it to the Amos Herr House Foundation.
